SWEET TREAT: Geneva-based jeweler de Grisogono gave reporters an early peek at its Baselworld lineup at a lunch at Hôtel Costes in Paris, where it unveiled its Sugar watch.

Inspired by sweet treats, the ladies’ timepiece comes in four variations — white diamonds, emeralds, orange sapphires and blue sapphires — with the stones appearing to spill from the case. In fact, dozens of closed-set stones were attached to the bottom and right-hand side of the watch by invisible hooks.

“It’s an original classic,” asserted de Grisogono creative director Fawaz Gruosi, showing off a white gold version featuring diamonds on the case, dial, clasp and even the back of the watch — a luxury that will be known only to the bearer. The price tag is just over 106,000 euros, or $142,000 at current exchange.

Gruosi blamed the rising cost of raw materials, though he noted that the high end is holding up better than midpriced pieces. The watches are also available with colored mother-of-pearl dials, and all feature tone-on-tone stingray straps, a de Grisogono signature.

For the next edition of the Baselworld watch fair, scheduled for April 25 to May 2, the jeweler is doubling the size of its stand to 1,000 square meters, or 10,765 square feet, to take advantage of the fully renovated venue. Its new stand won’t be ready until 2014, but in the meantime, de Grisogono plans to use the extra space for a “garden” where visitors and buyers can relax between appointments.
