DESIGN CLIMBS IN NYC: When it comes to having the greatest concentration of designers, New York City stands head and shoulders above the rest of the country. New York City has 65 percent more designers than any other metro region, according to the Center for an Urban Future. In a report released Thursday, the group noted there were 40,340 full-time designers as of last year — a 74 percent jump compared to 2000. Referring to those who work in fields such as architecture, fashion design, graphic design, interior design and industrial design, the study found that the number of design firms has increased by 10 percent in the last two years, with the fastest growth stemming from fashion and landscape design — in the period between 2003 and 2012, fashion design (with a 38 percent increase in firms), landscape design (plus 32 percent) and architecture (plus 24 percent).
With 3,884 design firms, New York City leads the nation followed by Los Angeles, which has 2,731, and Chicago, which houses 2,358. Between 2003 and 2012, Brooklyn and Queens both outpaced Manhattan in the growth of design firms. While the number of all design firms in Manhattan increased by just 6 percent during this time, Brooklyn experienced a 101 percent gain and Queens a 45 percent gain.
