EBAY ACQUIRES PHISIX: Ebay Inc. has acquired PhiSix for an undisclosed amount. PhiSix is a computer graphics firm that creates 3D models of apparel from photos and pattern files to “simulate the behavior” of the item, eBay said.
The technology allows consumers to see how the apparel items fit, look and move in different environments without having to actually try them on, given the constraints of the online shopping environment.
PhiSix’s technology can be utilized from any device. It uses a virtual fitting room that enables consumers to determine fit, as well as have the ability to recommend a size for the shopper based on basic measurement inputs. Consumers can also use the 3D models to allow consumers to view the merchandise in different scenarios, whether walking down the street or at on a course at a golf club.
EBay said the technology can be integrated across the entire eBay portfolio to enhance online and in-store shopping experiences.
PhiSix was founded by Jonathan Su in 2012. Su is a former Intel research scientist. He and his team of three will be joining eBay’s innovation and new ventures team, and will be responsible for working on ways to transform retail.
