ECO EFFORT: Gucci and Safilo are seeing green. The Italian fashion house and its eyewear licensing partner are introducing bamboo-inspired sunglasses made of biodegradable “Liquid Wood,” a material composed of wood fiber from sustainable forests, lignin from paper manufacturing and natural wax. Hinges in recycled metal and mineral glass lenses complete the new ecological vision.
Last year, Gucci launched 100 percent recyclable packaging with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper. The brand is now offering the same packaging for its eyewear, while a new, foldable glasses case will come with a pre-addressed envelope and instructions on where to send it for recycling. Customers will find the case first at Gucci boutiques starting this month, and from August onwards throughout the eyewear distribution network.
