FRESH START: Esteban Cortazar is venturing into new business territory. The Colombian designer presented his new 18-piece “trans-seasonal capsule collection” in a trunk show at Printemps on Thursday night, putting it immediately up for sale in the French department store’s Maria Luisa boutique, known for nurturing fresh talent.

This is Cortazar’s first step back into brick-and-mortar. He teamed with online retailer Net-a-porter last year to relaunch his namesake label after having exited his post of head designer at Emanuel Ungaro.

Cortazar said the e-tailer “really helped build my consumer base, but always supported the idea of me branching out to offline partners,” while adding he was also in talks with stores in the Middle East and the United States as a next step.

Maria Luisa Poumaillou, founder of the eponymous boutique, said the online-cum-trunk show model was “a clever way for small, independent designers to survive, and we are happy to provide this experience.”

For his second collection, Cortazar found inspiration in the movements of stingrays and took cues from Japanese architect Tadao Ando to produce a graphic lineup based on white, light gray and charcoal. It features dresses with detachable layers that play with volume as well as hybrid outerwear items such as a parka-cape combination with a built-in vest and oversized hoody. 

The pieces retail for between 400 euros, or $519 at current exchange, for a bodysuit to 1,900 euros, or $2,464, for a curve-hugging dress.

Printemps has the exclusivity for the capsule line before it goes on sale on Net-a-porter on July 17. The collection is to remain at Maria Luisa until the end of August.
