FAIRY TALES CAN COME TRUE: At least in the hands of Disney, Angelina Jolie and Stella McCartney. From the three powerhouses comes Maleficent by Stella McCartney Kids, a capsule collection of children’s clothes inspired by Disney’s forthcoming redux of “Sleeping Beauty,” in which Jolie stars in the title role of Maleficent, with Elle Fanning playing Princess Aurora.
“I’ve always been a huge fan of Disney growing up, as was my mother, and I grew up watching all the films like most kids did,” said McCartney, who has collaborated with Disney in the past with a costume jewelry line for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010 and who featured Disney characters in her fall 2009 ad campaign. “When the opportunity presented itself and I was invited by Angelina Jolie to visit the film set, I jumped at the chance.”
The collection of eight styles includes princess dresses and sandals, as well as edgy T-shirts and sneakers, for boys and girls ages four to 14. Prices range from about $75 to $185. The movie opens May 30, and the collection will be available at Stella McCartney stores worldwide, including its first kids’ store in Hong Kong, and online, as well as Disney stores and online, and select kids’ stores at the end of April. Ten percent of the sales made in Stella McCartney stores and online will benefit SOS Children’s Villages, which works to provide homes for children in need.
Asked what drew her to this film (aside from Disney and Jolie), McCartney said, “There is a bit of a darkness to ‘Maleficent’ which can be really scary at times but at the same time visually brilliant.”
