NEW YORK — Bergdorf Goodman is making the final tweaks to its renovated main floor, which will be unveiled on Tuesday. The overhaul — conceived by senior vice president of fashion and store presentation Linda Fargo as part of the retailer’s 20/20 plan — refocuses the retailer’s accessories departments.
While the store’s jewelry salon on the main floor opened in December, the rest of the floor featuring an updating handbag department will be revealed Tuesday, including new Central Park-facing window exposure and updated fixtures and shops-in-shop.
To mark the occasion, 30 of Bergdorf’s key handbag vendors have designed a total of 87 limited-edition bags.
From Proenza Schouler and Bottega Veneta, to Marni and Loewe, the special-edition bags are meant to strike a New York-inspired synergy with the new space. Designs have been produced in limited runs — between one and 30 pieces each. The pieces retail from $295 for a Gucci cell phone case to $23,000 for a Givenchy style.
“We did very special strong bags, they are not something we are just calling exclusive for the sake of it — that doesn’t speak to being as special as these designs are,” said Melissa Lowenkron, Bergdorf’s senior vice president and general merchandise manager for women’s handbags.
“I think it’s really about curation, when I think about our floor and the mix of a lot of amazing vendors out there, some are exclusive points of distribution, but you find a lot of the same brands in a number of stores so it’s about how we curate as well as collaborate [with designers] regarding exclusivity — making sure there are bags that are exclusive and speaking to who our core customer is as well as to reach new and different shoppers,” Lowenkron added of Bergdorf’s assortment.
While Bottega Veneta reworked its signature weaving technique to mimic New York’s gridded skyline, Proenza Schouler made a graphic update to its new Hava top handle bag, with contrasting diagonal black stripes.
Said Proenza’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of their design: “The Hava top handle is part of the new generation of Proenza Schouler bags and is an evolution of past iconic bags. It twists, subvert and elevates the house’s codes to create something that feels special and right for today.
“The exclusive bag created for Bergdorf Goodman is rendered in mixed exotic stripes, inlaid with leather and suede and stripped of all excess. The edges are left raw and hand-painted to emphasize the bag’s lightness and handcrafted quality. It is definitely the most luxurious of all the new bags, perfect for Bergdorf Goodman,” the designers said.
