POPE TIME: When Pope Francis arrived Tuesday afternoon for his inaugural trip to the U.S., the First Family, as well as Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill, greeted him at Joint Base Andrews in Washington, D.C. As well-wishers chanted, “Pope,” “Pope,” “Pope,” His Holiness smiled broadly, removing his zucchetto, or skullcap, before descending the Airstair to the tarmac. While President Obama was first in line to greet the pontiff, the First Lady was ready and waiting right beside him. Michelle Obama could not be missed wearing a skylight blue short-sleeved belted Carolina Herrera dress. FLOTUS accented her ensemble in Jimmy Choo silver mirrored leather Aza pumps.
The designer, a devout Catholic, could not be reached for immediate comment. Given the chance, the Venezuelan-born Herrera certainly could relate to the Argentine pope, who is fluent in Spanish, Italian and German.
The First Lady was all smiles, sharing a few words with His Holiness before introducing her younger daughter Sasha, who appeared to share the welcoming committee’s glee. The same could be said for Malia, who also shook the pontiff’s hand enthusiastically, keeping one forearm across her stomach as if to steady herself.
Now that his three-city, nonstop American tour has officially started, Pope Francis may occasionally have to keep an eye on the time. But he won’t have to turn to Secret Service agents, political dignitaries, cardinals, handlers or any of his worshipers for that. The pontiff touched ground wearing his trusty Swatch.
