ANDERSON JOINS HANLEY MELLON: Frederick Anderson has joined the soon-to-be-launched Hanley Mellon lifestyle sportswear label as president. While Anderson will remain co-owner and co-chief executive officer of Douglas Hannant, he said Wednesday that he will not be as involved with the day-to-day operations as he has for the past 17 years.

Already at work at Hanley Mellon, Anderson said he has known co-owners Nicole Hanley Mellon and Matthew Mellon for years and he has long wanted to work with a sportswear firm. Working closely with them, Anderson will oversee all business operations and strategy. Anderson said the company is gearing up for the September presentation of its first spring women’s collection during New York Fashion Week.

In October, there will be a soft launch of Hanley Mellon’s Web site, which will include a capsule fall collection that will solely be available online. The trio is also finalizing plans for a pop-up store to coincide with that debut, Anderson said. From one season to the next, Hanley Mellon will feature bridge-priced core originals, with Internet exclusives in the designer price point range offered periodically.

At Douglas Hannant, Anderson led the opening of its first flagship, in New York’s Plaza Hotel, and developed the label into a global brand. He also lined up multiple licenses including a fragrance with Robert Piguet and several line extensions including the Douglas Hannant Pink, Fur and Insignia collections. With a strong team in place there and consistent sales, Anderson said he was in a position to take on a new role with a sportswear company.

“They are two totally different ideas,” Anderson said of the two non-competitive companies. Noting that multitasking senior executives is not a new phenomenon to the fashion industry, Anderson said, “Many people have done it for many years.”
