THE ALEX ARMY: To the list of one-name arbiters of cool and/or crazy that typically populate the front row at Alexander Wang’s runway shows, add Miguel. The recently minted R&B star showed up early to Pier 94 on Saturday ahead of a pack that would eventually include Kanye and Terry and Courtney.
“I’ve never met him, but its all art and culture,” Miguel said of his host and his connection between fashion and music. “There’s a voracious appetite that comes with being creative and a desire to be inspired. We find it wherever we can.”
Wang’s design aesthetic tends to be slouchier Miguel’s previously established ultra-tailored style (though he dressed the part Saturday in an oversized button up), immortalized at the Billboard Awards when he shorted a stage leap and collided crotch-first with two fans.
“Thanks for that I appreciate you reminding me,” he laughed. “I forget about it, then every once in awhile… I need that reminder. If at the very least I could give you a laugh for a moment, it’s cool. I’ve done my job for the day.”
Across the cavernous space, in a second VIP front row that included Tyson and Kimberly Chandler, Kerry Washington explained that it was her first time at the show. A political cause, however, would keep her from attending its historically raucous after party.
“Well, Glamour’s throwing a dinner for me tonight,” she said. “Then I’m going to go to sleep because tomorrow I’m doing a political rally in New Jersey for [Barbara] Buono and [Milly] silva, who are running for governor and lieutenant governor. Milly Silva’s actually my cousin.”
