The former Oscar de la Renta designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia presented the first collection for their own label Monse at The Norwood Club in Chelsea on Saturday afternoon. If their front row was any indication, they have a promising future ahead of them.
The actress Ruth Wilson, best known for Showtime’s “The Affair,” met Garcia when he worked on the de la Renta dress she wore to the this year’s Costume Institute gala. When she heard through her stylist he was setting up his own shop, she took time out from filming the second season of her series to make her only appearance of New York Fashion Week.
“He’s been working in the shadows for years and now it’s time to shine,” she said. She was wearing a look from the collection that showed just the right amount of skin off the shoulder to get her approval.
“It’s really sensual and sexy, but it’s also feminine and there’s a strength to it,” she continued. “Basically, it’s up my alley.”
A couple of designers, Prabal Gurung and Wes Gordon, also came out to cheer on one of their own.
“I know what it feels like, the anxiety. It was only five years ago I went out on my own,” Gurung said. “You have to be there for others. There’s enough room for everyone.”
Sitting directly across from Gurung was a far more interesting character: Tom Ford International chairman Domenico De Sole, though he declined to take questions from a reporter, saying only he came to see the show.
