Antonio Banderas will play the role of Gianni Versace in an upcoming movie directed by Bille August on the late designer. After rumors about the project surfaced last year, August, attending the Ischia Global Film & Music Fest, said filming will start in December in Milan, according to Italian media reports. Filming will then move to Reggio Calabria, the southern town where Versace was born, and Miami, where he was killed in 1997. Details about the script were not available, but the Italian fashion group told WWD that it “has neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming movie about Versace. The movie should only be seen as a work of fiction.”
As reported, in May Banderas, who has also been studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London, presented his first collection in collaboration with Selected, a Scandinavian high-street label. He admitted at the time that he had been inspired by Versace for gold metal embellishments into his biker jacket.
August, whose film “Pelle the Conqueror” from 1987 won a Palme d’Or, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, also directed “The Home of the Spirits,” also starring Banderas, “Goodbye Bafana,” on Nelson Mandela, and “Night Train to Lisbon.”
