President Barack Obama is expecting Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the White House on an official visit on Tuesday. Renzi has gathered a group of notable Italians to accompany him and his wife, Agnese Landini. From the fashion world, Giorgio Armani will be part of the delegation attending the State Dinner that evening. Renzi has been inaugurating Milan Fashion Week for two seasons and, on both occasions, he was seen hobnobbing with Armani, taking some time to speak with the designer. Last year, he met privately with Armani upon the opening of the designer’s Silos exhibition space and museum, and he attended the designer’s Emporio show in 2012.
Other Italians expected to attend the dinner include Academy Award winners Roberto Benigni, of “Life is Beautiful,” and director Paolo Sorrentino, of “The Great Beauty”; Fabiola Gianotti, the director-general of Cern, the European Organization for Nuclear Research; the president of Italy’s anti-corruption authority Raffaele Cantone; Paola Antonelli, senior curator of the Museum of Modern Art’s department of design and architecture, and Paralympic wheelchair fencer Bebe Vio, who attended the first Dior show designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri at the end of September. Over the weekend, Vio posted on Instagram a photo of a gown she plans to wear, designed for her by the couturier. Celebrity chef Mario Batali will help prepare the meal and Gwen Stefani is expected to perform at the event.
