GLOBETROTTING: No matter how tangential they might be, an increasing number of designers, brands and sponsors want in on New York Fashion Week. One of the latest to join the fray is the Harlem Globetrotters, which will unveil new uniforms and a commemorative 90th-anniversary fashion line on Sept. 15.
Angela Simmons, who launched the faux-fur label Foofi in March, will be designing the basketball-inspired looks. Show guests may know her from her family’s reality show run – her father Joseph was better known in his Run-DMC days as “Rev Run.” Simmons’ uncle Russell is even more of a familiar face with the fashion crowd.
The New York-born and bred designer will offer her take on the classic Globetrotters uniform and three of the team’s players including “Cheese” Chisholm will be among the runway models (no doubt) showing off Simmons’ take on the team’s red, white and blue uniforms. Internationally known for their theatrical ball handling and grandstanding, the Globetrotters’ world tour will get under way Dec. 27 in New York. Over the years, the players have showed off their athletic wizardry and circuslike antics on basketball courts in 122 countries.
As a curtain raiser to the 90th-anniversary celebration, the team’s chief executive officer Kurt Schneider will be at next week’s Kia Style 360 event. A Globetrotters fan since she was “a little girl,” Simmons said, “I’ve loved the Harlem Globetrotters – especially their winning track record. My goal for this collection was to reimagine the look of the legendary Globetrotters uniforms by infusing elements of the team’s rich 90-year history with New York City vibes and basketball-inspired swagger.”
Schneider added, “Angela Simmons has the pulse of the younger generation, as well as our fashionable mom demographic. As a devoted Globetrotter fan herself, Angela has done an amazing job pulling inspiration from our past to influence a new look that will shine at Fashion Week.”
