WINDOW DRESSING: Harrods has set some serious challenges for Santa this season, unveiling a string of Christmas windows filled with one-off creations — only some of which are for sale. This year, the Knightsbridge store has conjured a “Land of Make-Believe” featuring oversized classic toys and mannequins dressed by designers including Stella McCartney, Matthew Williamson, Thom Browne and the Beirut-based couturier Zuhair Murad.
McCartney’s snow queen dress is for sale, and it’s one-of-a-kind. A heavily embroidered and embellished silk number with a Forties feel, it has structured shoulders and a long skirt. It features faux gems that were “antiqued” — heated to remove some of their shine and luster – and then hand-stitched onto the dress. The dress comes in one size — a U.K. 10 — and costs 22,000 pounds, or $35,000.
Those who miss out on the Stella dress can always hunt down the Christmas carousel horses, which have been garlanded with Bottega Veneta clutches and leather-quilted bags. In addition, Jo Malone has created a mechanical clock, complete with a selection of fragrances. While that is not for sale, customers can buy a Jo Malone Advent calendar, which is also filled with fragrances.
