Zellers, founded in 1931, had been Canada’s second-largest mass merchandise chain. A subsidiary of Hudson’s Bay Co., Zellers operated 272 stores across Canada and posted total sales of $3.2 billion in 2011. Virtually all stores were shuttered in 2011, with the exception of three kept for liquidation of inventory, following the acquisition of most locations by Target Canada in 2011.
The sale of IP assets is part of the chain’s winding down of operations.
