The Independent Handbag Designer Awards are back once again. The ninth annual competition, which recognizes excellence in handbag design, will be held in New York City on June 17.
The ceremony, organized by Emily Blumenthal of Handbag Designer 101, will honor winners in nine categories, several sponsored by a corporate partner. Categories include Best Handbag in Overall Style & Design, the Trina Turk Best Student Made Handbag, the Bernina Best Handmade Handbag, the Klean Kanteen Best Green Handbag, the Fashion 4 Development Most Socially Responsible Handbag, Distinctively Denim By Guess, and the InStyle.com Audience Fan Favorite Handbag. Additionally, two new categories will be introduced this year: the Stand Out & Look Great Work Bag by MOO and the Mary Kay Most Irresistible Makeup Bag. All winners will receive a yearlong membership with the Accessories Council and be featured in the September issue of InStyle, with additional prizes varied by category. Applications for the competition are now open on TheHandbagAwards.com.
Rebecca Minkoff will receive this year’s Iconoclast Award, which honors established designers in the handbag field. ““I’m very flattered to be rewarded for my hard work in this industry,” Minkoff said. “I’m honored to be recipient of the ICONOCLAST award and to follow in the footsteps of such industry leaders like; Kenneth Cole and Deborah Lloyd.”
