INDIE WATCH: Champagne and canapes circled the vbeauté counter at Bergdorf Goodman last week, where about 75 guests celebrated the skin-care and cosmetic brand’s one-year anniversary. “We were the first Indie beauty brand in Bergdorf’s,” said Julie Macklowe, founder, chief executive officer and president of vbeauté, adding that 10 percent of the purchases made during the fete benefited the 92Y Nursery School. The event drew about 75 attendees, including Cameron Silver, Emily Blavatnik, Debbie August, Stephanie Hirsch, Kara Kaplan Freedman, Lauren Roberts and Julia Flynn.

Although her brand is a relatively small player on the retailer’s ample beauty floor, Macklowe said she prefers offering an edited assortment, with a focus on uniqueness. As an example, she cited her Lip Spread, an antiaging lip gloss that adjusts to skin tone, imparting a one-of-a-kind shade for each wearer. “Our customers love brands that are not well known,” said Patricia Saxby, vice president and divisional merchandise manager for beauty at Bergdorf Goodman. “They like to be the ones to tell their friends.”
