DEEP DIVE: A crowd gathered Thursday night in the Issey Miyake boutique in Paris just hours after the label’s men’s ready-to-wear show to celebrate the collection, which drew inspiration from images of deep-sea creatures.
Issey Miyake designer Yusuke Takahashi had seen them in the book, “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss,” by Claire Nouvian, founder of the nonprofit organization Bloom Association.
Takahashi said he had found the work in a Tokyo bookstore and was taken by its images of strangely shaped creatures with vivid coloring.
“When I found the book, I could easily imagine the clothes,” said Takahashi, adding he also traveled to Palau island country to research the sea and tropical elements of his collection.
Images of the deep-sea creatures hanging in the Miyake boutique will be auctioned off in October with proceeds going to Bloom, whose mission is to put an end to the deep ocean’s destruction.
