JEAN PAUL GAULTIER IS CALLED TO THE BAR: Jean Paul Gaultier is adding another string to his design bow. This weekend, he will serve as “creative director” of Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s fourth annual Grey Goose Character & Cocktails event benefitting the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Which means that he’s designed the space, a South London location temporarily dubbed the Grey Goose Maison de Mode.
Gaultier was given full creative control of the party, from the cocktails through to which items will be auctioned for the charity. Gaultier noted that he took a similar approach to creating the space as he does to designing a collection. “I only know how to dress, so in a way I dressed the space,” he said, adding the event will have many of his design signatures. “My sailor stripe will morph from the walls to the floors….there will be lace, there will be crystals…but also lots of surprises.” Gaultier has also designed a bar for the event, in a similar shape to his mannequin-like perfume bottles, which will be auctioned for the EJAF. However, Gaultier has a tough precedent to beat – at last year’s event, the bar that Lily Allen designed for the party went for 100,000 pounds, or about $160,000.
