“He’s in heaven right now with Ralph. I’m not going to even disrupt him.”
Jessica Seinfeld was standing a few feet from her husband, Jerry, who was deeply entrenched in conversation with Ralph Lauren on the second floor of the Ralph Lauren mansion. The designer had opened up his flagship Wednesday night to host a charity shopping event to benefit GOOD+, specifically the organization’s fatherhood initiative. “We have such a wonderful relationship with this company [Ralph Lauren], and Jerry with Ralph, that we wanted to bring our GOOD+ world to the store and get together again and celebrate a really wonderful year together,” Jessica explained.
While the crowd sipped on cocktails and champagne — a few perusing the designer’s latest wares for sale — Jessica already had her eye on a particular outfit: the one she was wearing. “I’m going to just go pay for it because it’s so awesome,” she said, taking stock of her loaned black brocade suit. “I wouldn’t wear it all together but I think it looks pretty chic.”
GOOD+ is focused on ending the cycle of poverty at the family-level, and its fatherhood initiative provides support and programs for men. “We’ve been doing it quietly for a few years,” Jessica said of the initiative, explaining several of the benefits of men becoming more engaged parents. “It changes the financial stability of a family, and it helps to heal some relationships that have been broken over time.”
“There are so many programs for moms — as there should be — but we felt that the father piece is just as important,” said Jerry, stepping away from Ralph for a second to tout the cause. “I think there’s been a cultural trend of ‘expendable men,’ and I kind of feel the opposite, for obvious reasons.” Jessica placed a ginger hand on his cheek.
And as for his relationship with Ralph…”It’s 99 percent car talk,” Jerry said. “We both love sports cars, and we love to talk about them.”
