CRYSTAL PALACE: “We wanted Mat to show us what crystals look like from the inside, looking out,” said Sandra Choi of the gigantic artwork — and video images — created by Mat Collishaw that were on display at a candlelit dinner hosted by Jimmy Choo on Thursday night.
Guests including Collishaw, Harry Blain, Isla Fisher, Kate Mara, Princess Beatrice, Tinie Tempah and Arizona Muse gathered at One Mayfair — formerly St. Mark’s Church — and spent much of the evening gazing up at the hefty, illuminated crystal shard sculptures that filled the space, and at the videos of crystals — which on closer examination resembled skyscrapers.
“Sandra came to me with the idea of diamonds and jewels on one hand and city streets and skyscrapers on the other. It was about putting those ideas together,” said Collishaw, who also shot the ad campaign for Jimmy Choo’s Cruise 2015 collection, called Vices.
The artist added that he’s intrigued by the primitive nature of crystals — and their relevance to modern life and technology. “Look at silicon — it’s a crystal you can find in a cave,” he said.
Mara, meanwhile, was more focused on the streets of London. The actress, who will soon begin filming “Man Down” alongside Gary Oldman in New Orleans, has been cutting a swathe through the capital.
“I saw my friend Cillian Murphy in Ballyturk at the National Theatre, and my plans are to just wander around and shop — at Matches and Bluebird in Chelsea — and hopefully do something cultural,” said the actress.
