JOY TO THE MARKET: Handbag designer Joy Gryson has opened a pop-up shop at Chelsea Market. The shop, which will be open through Sunday, is decorated with artist Josh Hadar’s metal sculptures of bicycles and hot rods.
The pop-up shop will feature Gryson’s two collections, Joy Gryson and IllBeCa. Gryson in 1996 left her job as director of design and development at Marc Jacobs handbags and accessories to start her own firm. She designed in 2008 a limited time collection, Gryson for Target, for the mass retailer. Gryson favors colors found in nature for her eponymous collection, which is at once utilitarian and luxurious. Many styles have adjustable and detachable handles, metal feet and hidden tuck lock entries on the Ruby Classic. Gryson often mixes textures, combining Italian calf suede with smooth cowhide. The Olivia Classic has Gryson’s signature leather braided handles and is priced at $795. The Melanie belted tote is $495 and the Ella hair calf clutch, $395. The lower-priced IllBeCa collection ranges from $128 for a Chruch Street crossbody to $248 for the Reed Street tote. Gryson said she opened the pop-up to “get the brand message out there, reach a broader audience who might not know brand yet or does not get down to our store in TriBeCa or our store in Brooklyn.” She decided to populate the space with Hadar’s sculptures, which she said “make metal come to life,” because she “didn’t want to do the same old pop-up you see all over town.”
