SHINE ON: Milan’s La Rinascente is getting into the Christmas spirit with an art installation for its store windows that overlook Piazza Duomo. The department store turned to Swiss artist John Armleder to create an installation,“Let it Shine, Let it Shine, Let it Shine. It’s Xmas again!,” which will be on display through Jan. 3.
Chosen by art critic Cloe Piccoli, the windows feature Armleder’s well-known “Pour Paintings” — large textured and painted canvases — and are half-filled with sparkling Christmas tree decorations to the sound of festive music. Pedestrians are also able to get a glimpse into the history of the installation with the help of young curators and artists from the Brera Fine Arts Academy and a making-of video, produced in collaboration with the artist.
With this new collaboration, La Rinascente continues to strengthen its ties to the art world. In 2011, the Christmas windows featured Californian artist Anthony Ausgang’s oversized and colorful cat cartoons characters, whereas in 2012 Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and Danish engineer Frederik Ottesen teamed up for solar powered, sun-shaped lamps. Last year’s windows saw the work of six young illustrators, who created oversized pop-up books, which continually opened and closed.
