Lena Dunham, creator and star of “Girls,” sent out an e-mail to Emily’s List subscribers today talking about abortion and women’s rights.
“I was lucky enough to be born to a mother who is an active supporter of reproductive justice, and from an early age I learned the importance of access to safe and legal abortion,” Dunham writes. Inspired by her mother’s activism and the desire to protect her future children, she said she is committed to defending it, on the 43rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.
Even though Roe v. Wade was decided 13 years before her birth, she said it has profoundly shaped her life. “According to the highest court in the land, the choice to have an abortion is our right. But now we are seeing unprecedented attacks by Republicans against that right,” she writes.
Dunham asked for a $3 donation to Emily’s List to help elect pro-choice women who will protect Roe v. Wade for her generation and generations to come. She also asked for support for Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, Donna Edwards and dozens of other pro-choice candidates that Emily’s List has endorsed.
“The older I get, the more I realize that when women gather, their power and energy are unstoppable. (Have you ever been to a sample sale?),” she writes.
She signed it, “Your comrade, Lena.”
