Contemporary label Tbags Los Angeles is unveiling a new look and a new name, Misa, with its spring collection shipping in January. When Shadi Askari-Farhat founded the line in 2001, she was making brightly patterned fabric handbags that played on the West Coast bohemian style. A few years later, she transitioned into stretch jersey maxidresses and tunics.

“People would ask me, ‘Why is it called Tbags?’ I was 22 and needed to come up with a name overnight,” she said. Now, Askari-Farhat’s aesthetic and lifestyle have matured, and she was tired of hearing “That’s not Tbags” when she would try to introduce elevated items into the line. “To me, that didn’t make sense. What I am now is Misa and I am putting everything I love in the collection.” Named after her daughters Milla and Sayeh, the line is now only 10 percent stretch jersey and incorporates chiffon, crochet, wovens and embroideries and is priced slightly higher, between $80 and $110 wholesale.

While distribution will continue in, and Saks Fifth Avenue, Misa will also retail in new boutiques such as Madison Los Angeles and in Australia and Europe. “I’ve elevated the photography and imagery to reflect the strong and free-spirited woman who wears it,” she said of her brand, which is made in downtown Los Angeles.
