FRENCH HONOR: French ambassador to India François Richier on Tuesday presented the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur to Indian designer Manish Arora at a ceremony at the ambassador’s residence. Arora has often worked in Paris, showing his multicolored, vibrant and fantastic designs at Paris Fashion Week and serving as creative director at Paco Rabanne. He opened his flagship in Paris in 2014.
“It is the first time in the world of fashion in India to be awarded this honor,” Arora said, adding wistfully, “I wish the Indian government could take a lesson from this.”
With the French and Indian flags in the background, the tribute to Arora was cheered on by a big turnout from the fashion fraternity as well as from Swarovski. His work with Swarovski crystals is as well known as his psychedelic colors.
“Why does Paris remain the capital of fashion?” Richier asked Arora on stage, and answered quickly himself, “Precisely because we attract people like you.”
Arora launched his label in 1997 and debuted at London Fashion Week in September 2005. He started showing at Paris Fashion Week in September 2008. His celebrity clientele includes Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj.
