TO THE MAX: Mark Zuckerberg, cofounder and chief executive officer of Facebook, and his wife, Priscilla Chan, said Tuesday they have created the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, with the mission to advance human potential and promote equality. Inspired by the birth of their daughter, Max Chan Zuckerberg, last week, the couple wrote an open letter on Facebook to her, noting that they want her to grow up in a world better than theirs. They pledged to donate 99 percent of their Facebook shares, currently worth about $45 billion, during their lives to charitable purposes. Their strategy is to make long-term investments over 25, 50 or even 100 years since “the greatest challenges can’t be solved by short-term thinking.”
“Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities,” they wrote.
