KATZ GOES FOR GOLD: Addressing womens’ appetite for more casual fine jewelry, Martin Katz this month is launching his first Gold Collection exclusively in his Beverly Hills salon.
The 20-piece range is fashioned from 18k yellow and rose gold and includes Katz classics such as diamond mircobands and rose-cut and cushion-cut diamonds-by-the-yard necklaces (24 and 38 inches long), plus one-of-a-kind pieces such as a nine-carat mandarin garnet ring microset with diamonds and orange sapphires.
“Clients were asking for gold, which has a more beachy, dressed-down look, so I started with chains they can wear with jeans,” said Katz, who has already sold several prototypes, some of which use over 2,000 diamonds, to eager collectors.
The collection ranges from daintier bar-chain and marquise-link multi-strand bracelets to weightier pieces such as 25mm diamond hoops and one-off statement rings featuring emeralds and garnets.
Among the design departures for Katz are diamond drop earrings featuring teardrop lapis briolettes and rustic sliced diamond drop earrings set in yellow gold.
While retail prices range from $2,500 for a microset diamond band up to $69,000 for the mandarin garnet ring, Katz said “the filet” of prices is $20,000 to $50,000.
He noted, “There’s a softness to yellow gold that inspires me to design in different ways that allow women to wear it every day as opposed to saving the shiny all-white pieces for serious occasions.”
