IT’S A MATCH: Matchesfashion.com is to launch a six-piece capsule collection with Simone Rocha on Oct. 20. On Saturday night, with Paris Fashion Week in full swing, Ruth Chapman, who founded the British retailer with husband Tom, hosted an intimate dinner at the art-stuffed, 18th-century restaurant Lapérouse in Paris with Rocha to celebrate the occasion.
“I wanted to do something that starts with my autumn-winter [collection], which is my first season with Matchesfashion.com, but a new interpretation of it, so using my signatures but in a new way,” Rocha said, over cocktails in one of the numerous small salons where the refined and whimsical items were displayed on mannequins.
Rocha, who was wearing a black, flower-embroidered long-sleeve dress, said that she designed a whole new fabric for the capsule. “It’s tulle that is embroidered with mohair that is then brushed, so it’s like a brushed mohair on tulle, so it gives a beautiful texture, very hand-done feeling special. And then same we did a red tulle, this time we did the red resin beading to highlight the movement on the skirt.”
“It’s very limited, exclusive signature pieces from Simone,” said Natalie Kingham, buying director for Matchesfashion.com. Prices range from for 275 British pounds for the bag, to 895 for a blouse and 1,650 for a dress, or $357, $1,161 and $2,140 at current exchange respectively.
“We love all that she does that has so much integrity, romance and elegance about it,” said Chapman wearing a Simone Rocha black top and drop earrings.
Guests including Rocha’s mother, Odette and jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez, who navigated the narrow staircase for dinner where Chapman toasted Rocha who staged a spring show during London Fashion Week with her lovingly distorted takes on communion dresses. “Whatever you do is so gorgeous. The talent is immense. Whenever we’re sitting in a show, we feel it beforehand, we feel it during the show and we all talk about it afterwards,” Chapman said.
Up next, Rocha is to open a 2,000-square-foot flagship on Wooster street in Manhattan in the spring. It will mark her second store after London. The label is already distributed in about 60 doors Stateside including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Dover Street Market.
Meanwhile, Matchesfashion.com’s next capsule collections this fall include Off-White for men and Nicholas Kirkwood, Roksanda Ilincic and Katie Eary for women. The British retailer also plans to launch a French version in March.
