SHAPE SHIFTER: Trust Muriel Grateau to come up with some unusual ideas for jewelry. The black-clad designer with long salt-and-pepper hair gleaned inspiration from Fifties and Sixties French decorative arts masters, such as Jean Royère and Line Vautrin, for her new “Miroir de Sorcière” (or sorcerer’s eye mirror, in English) high-jewelry collection. It will be unveiled on Sept. 26 in her boutique in Paris’ seventh arrondissement.

One-of-a-kind brooches with hand-carved rock-crystal domes and silver coating are set in crude white gold or black-chromed gold highlighted with colored diamonds, amethysts and citrines. Meanwhile, bracelets, rings, pendant earrings and necklaces, at more affordable prices, feature silver-coated spheres of hand-blown crystal on thin black snake-like chains with black- or white-diamond settings.

The sunburst-shaped, mirrored jewelry is not the only trick Grateau has up her sleeve. Soon to come also is the unconventional watch she is still perfecting, to be as small as possible.
