MAD WORLD: At this year’s Museum of Arts and Design Visionaries! Gala, held last month, honoree David Yurman was in a joking mood. “I’ve never thought that this was a career,” cracked the jewelry designer when asked about the award. “I’ve been looking to have a career. This is just something we do.” Yurman, along with wife Sybil, were among the evening’s five recipients of the Visionaries Award, given to creators and leaders in the art, craft and design industries.

“It’s a pleasure,” said Sybil. “We get to work together and now accept an award together.”

This was the first MAD gala for both of the designers.

“I’m surprised by how many people are here,” David said. “We didn’t know what to expect.”

The evening kicked off with a crowded cocktail hour-meets-silent auction in one of the Mandarian Oriental’s grand ballrooms. Lots up for sale ranged from a Joseph Reinholtz painting to a plastic surgery consultation. The auction was followed by the formal awards presentation. Following fellow honorees Wilfried Vancraen, Frank Stella and Rick Kinsel, the Yurmans closed the ceremony with some humorous ribbing.

“I’m not quite sure why we’re being honored,” Yurman said, as his wife nodded in agreement. “I mean, Frank Stella — hello!”
