PARIS — One of Nike’s most mythic and futuristic sneakers is coming back in the not too distant future.
The sporting goods giant said Thursday it is to release a limited 2015 edition of the Nike Mag next year, making it available via auction to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Details on the auction are to be posted on Nike’s Web site and Twitter feed in spring 2016.
Fox popularized the Space Age shoe with its luminescent outsole in the “Back to the Future” film series.
Highly collectible, pairs of the rare and unusual sneaker sell for thousands of dollars at specialty retailers.
According to Nike, the 2015 edition fulfills the fictional promise of the sneakers: A self-lacing system that senses the wearer and tightens to a comfortable level.
In 2011, Nike raised $4.7 million for the Michael J. Fox Foundation through a series of auctions, and said it already delivered the first pair of 2015 Nike Mags to the Canadian actor, its original wearer.
