THE GIVING SEASON: Calling all New York City dancers: Norma Kamali wants you in her swimwear. Starting today until merchandise runs out, the designer is giving away free swimwear exclusively to New York City dancers at her flagship store at 11 West 56th Street during its retail hours of 10am to 6pm. Upon showing proof of their company affiliation and providing contact information, dancers will have their pick from the designer’s past and current swimwear collections.
Though it may seem a bit random, Kamali has in fact had a long history of design collaborations in the world of dance (most recently, she worked with the choreographer Twyla Tharp on costumes for a performance of “Cornbread Duet” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.) According to Kamali, this giveaway was another way for her to show her support for the community. “Dancers have passion and live for their art,″ she told WWD. “I am thanking them by giving free swimwear from my years of collections.″ And, lest the dancers go a little overboard, there are some limitations: three free swim pieces max per customer.
