HANGING OUT: Patti Hansen’s friends and family perused rows of canvas handbags draped across plastic torsos that hung by fishing line Thursday night at Barneys New York. “I’m overwhelmed,” said a wide-eyed Hansen. “I can’t believe how beautiful everything turned out.” The event not only feted the former model’s exclusive handbag launch with the retailer, but also kicked off an auction in which 20 celebrities designed canvas versions of Hansen’s bags for charity. Partygoers included Fran Lebowitz, Hansen’s husband, Keith Richards and their two daughters, Alexandra and Theodora.
“I was determined to have the best bag because I’m very competitive,” said Barneys New York creative director Simon Doonan, pointing to his creation, a bag draped in long, dark hair. “It’s made of hair extensions from a wig shop in Midtown. It’s a PC version of fur.” Doonan, who sported an orange ruffle button down and a “hollow but heavy” gold Dior ring, showed off his personal canvas bag, which was slung across his chest and bore his initials, SD. “On the subway, someone asked me if I was from South Dakota,” he said. “And I said, ‘yes I am, honey.’”
