EUREKA MOMENTS: Paul Smith plans to offer some insight into how he draws inspiration from the world around him, with an exhibition on Jan. 11 during London Collections: Men.
The two-hour show will take place at Pace London gallery and will feature a small cube that matches the dimensions of Smith’s first shop, not much bigger than a postage stamp, in his hometown of Nottingham, and also show how the tango inspired his new Concertina bag.
It will also lift the veil on how a growing pile of bicycle jerseys in his office gave birth to the print on a new collection of accessories, and how a contorting street performer inspired his Suit To Travel In — as well as other designs.
The products featured will be current or core items, such as A Suit To Travel In — which is made from wrinkle-resistant Loro Piana wool — and the designer’s signature stripes.
Spring products such as the Concertina bag and those tied to the fall 2016 pre-collections will also be featured.
Judging from history, this brief show should be a hit: The designer’s 2013 exhibition “Hello, My Name Is Paul Smith” was the most popular in the London Design Museum’s history, and is currently on a tour around the world.
That exhibition took a long and extended look at Smith’s output — and his sources of creativity.
“Paul understands what the customer experience needs to be,” said Donna Loveday, who curated the show at the Design Museum. “He has never forgotten those principles; they are embedded in him from so many years of shopkeeping.”
As reported last month, changes are afoot at the brand, which has streamlined its labeling in a bid to simplify its offer in the eyes of consumers and strengthen the core name.
As of the fall 2016 season the Paul Smith collection will be consolidated under two labels, Paul Smith and a new collection known as PS by Paul Smith.
Paul Smith will include rtw, footwear and accessories for men and women. Smith’s handwritten signature logo will appear on the label and the collection will be presented on catwalks in London for women and in Paris for men.
PS by Paul Smith will be a new and more accessible collection that includes clothing, denim, footwear and accessories for men and women.
