MEET THE PRESIDENT: The guest list for the State Dinner on Friday night at the White House for Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Madame Peng Liyuan was heavy on politicos and figures from the worlds of entertainment and business — including Tim Cook of Apple, Bob Iger of Walt Disney Co. and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook — but there was at least one designer among the bunch: Phillip Lim. The founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim is American-born of Chinese descent and attended with Paul Hearing.
According to a White House pool report, Lim came through and discussed the ensemble that he designed for First Lady Michelle Obama Friday morning. He said it was a custom piece from his spring collection that was just shown in New York. “She wore it perfectly,” he said.
For the dinner, Vera Wang was the First Lady’s designer of choice. Obama chose a customized black silk crepe mermaid gown with an architectural V-neckline, tulle sleeves and a hand-draped silk organza pleated skirt. Born, raised and based in New York, Wang is of Chinese descent. And like many of her fellow designers, she has been busy expanding her business in Asia.
