STEALING TIME: Two thieves threatened staff at the Hyatt Regency Palais de la Méditerranée hotel on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, France, early Friday morning, local media reported. The pair, armed with a machine gun and a machete, concealed their faces with motorcycle helmets. One of the thieves cornered the receptionist while the other got to work on the watch cabinets next to the hotel’s jewelry boutique.

A police spokesman said the robbers left the scene on scooters. The value of the haul has not yet been calculated, but it is believed Rolex watches were among those stolen.

There has been a rash of robberies targeting the upmarket hotels and shops on the Côte D’Azur this summer. Last month an armed robber made off with 40 million euros, or $53 million at current exchange, in jewels from the Carlton hotel on the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes. And jewel thieves struck twice there during the Cannes Film Festival in May, making off with $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry and a de Grisogono necklace valued at 2 million euros, or $2.6 million.
