Suite 1521, the New York-based members-only shopping salon, is entering the beachside bacchanal of conspicuous consumption that is Art Basel Miami this year.
Cofounders Kim Kassel and Lizzie Tisch will bring the Suite south Dec. 3 and 4 at the St. Moritz building at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, where Tisch has a connection to management — her husband Jonathan Tisch is chairman of Loews Hotels. In a tweak of Suite 1521’s typical pre-order model, the Miami shop will offer stock, per a more traditional retail model, of five designers from the company’s roster including Tim Ryan, Alison Lou, The Rialto Jean Project, Markus Lupfer and Anya Hindmarch. “In keeping with the theme of the week, everyone we brought has a fun, artistic theme to their clothing,” said Kassel.
This is not the first time Kassel and Tisch have taken Suite 1521 on the road — they’ve held shopping events in the Hamptons and Palm Beach — but this is the first time the retail concept will be open to the public. “There’s a lot going on at Basel but we felt that it would be a fun thing to do and good for us from a business perspective to expand our reach,” said Kassel, noting that more “road trips” are planned for the spring, though as of now there are no plans for a permanent Suite 1521 outside of New York.
For their pop-up in Miami, Kassel and Tisch are recreating the interior vibe of their Manhattan space with similar furniture, decor and the same custom caramel candy that are wrapped in famous fashion sayings at the Loews. They are also bringing the contents of the Suite 1521 closet, which is the one or two pieces of stock that they carry from each designer on their roster to have on hand whether there is a pre-sale going on or not. “We have lots of gift items, like Markus Lupfer sweaters and a few pieces of Ashish,” said Kassel. “It’s fun pieces that people can walk away with.”
