GO EAST: An exhibition in Geneva later this year will shed a new light on Cartier’s Asian connections by showcasing jewelry designs inspired by China and Japan alongside treasures acquired by Swiss collector Alfred Baur.

“Asia Imagined in the Baur and Cartier Collections” is scheduled to run at the Baur Foundation from Nov. 12, 2015, to Feb. 14, 2016. Centering on the 19th-century fascination with Far Eastern objects, known as “curios,” it will feature diamond-clad pagodas and jade dragons alongside imperial porcelain, lacquer work and silks.

Alfred Cartier, who took over the family-owned firm in 1874, was a contemporary of Baur, who moved to Ceylan in 1884 and subsequently became a major collector of decorative arts from Asia.
