DECADE ‘DO: The Grove threw a 10th birthday party for itself and 250 staff members Wednesday at a park within the Los Angeles outdoor shopping center. To mark the occasion, the Inner City Mass Choir belted out ‘Happy Birthday,’ and Rick Caruso, founder and chief executive officer of The Grove’s owner Caruso Affiliated, gifted nine security, housekeeping and parking employees who have worked at The Grove since its 2002 opening with Cartier watches. “We have made our community a better place, and I can’t believe it’s been 10 years,” said Caruso. As several stores’ 10-year leases inked at The Grove’s inception end, Caruso Affiliated chief operating officer Paul Kurzawa said the shopping center would welcome 12 new retailers in the coming weeks. “Over the last 18 months, we’ve taken a look at our merchandise mix and the categories that are doing well, and we went out and looked for specific brands that are new and unique,” he said. Although Kurzawa wouldn’t divulge the retailers, he mentioned that men’s is an area of focus and that Caruso Affiliated has explored urban “boutique retailers that have captured markets that are not represented at shopping centers.”
