ART OR FASHION?: “People think accessories are commercial, but we believe they are objects of couture,” said Maria Grazia Chiuri at the signing of Valentino’s new accessories book at the Gagosian Gallery in Paris on Tuesday night.

With some of the pieces, including Valentino’s camouflage sneakers and lace espadrilles, neatly arranged in glass boxes mimicking precious works of art, the label’s design duo was energetically signing copies of the metal-studded, 200-page tome.

Chiuri said they chose “artists that we love to give their interpretation of the accessories,” with Philip-Lorca diCorcia and Douglas Gordon, among others, making the cut.

Asked which rendering surprised them most, the pair answered unison: “Nobuyoshi Araki.”

“We thought he would arrive with something sexy and dangerous, but it was really funny and ironic,” said Chiuri.

“Only when you look closely, you see the grotesque perversion,” noted Piccioli.
