A WEIGHTY TOPIC: After choosing the 100 most iconic dresses of the 20th century for her new book “The Impossible Collection of Fashion,” Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at FIT, whittled the collection down to her top 10 for a group of well-heeled women at Chicago’s Women’s Athletic Club earlier this month. Steele, who flew into Chicago to discuss and sign her $650 limited-edition mega coffee table book, also let the ladies in on a little secret.
Her favorite dress? A fiery Alexander McQueen gown from his VOSS collection made with red and black ostrich feathers and red medical slides that she said illustrated “the deathly beauty of fashion.”
Windy City women, who turned out for the luncheon and fashion show sponsored by the Winnetka boutique Neapolitan, not only ate up the insight, but enjoyed a light salad with Cornish hen before a handful of attendees hauled the hefty (it weighs almost 20 pounds) 144-page tome home.
