WATCH OUT: Madison Avenue’s reputation as a mecca for luxury watch lovers is growing.

On Monday, the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District received the Downtown Pinnacle Award for the staging of Madison Avenue Watch Week last April. The award was given by the International Downtown Association at its annual conference, which was held in New York.

“We had three goals: to further identify Madison Avenue as a specific destination for fine watches, to help retailers increase their sales and expose their brands to their clients, and for the clients, to really create something different and interesting,” said Matthew A. Bauer, president of the Madison Avenue BID. “We discouraged cocktail parties and wanted really strong programming,” that included opportunities for watch lovers to meet watchmakers and the presidents of different brands and learn from both, Bauer noted. Watch Week also tied in with tour operators and travel agents, and created a Web site.

“We’re planning Watch Week again for next spring,” Bauer said. The Madison Avenue BID beat out 13 other entries from other business associations in the category of events and programming. The Washington-based IDA strives to help enhance urban centers and includes business groups including BIDs.
