WHITNEY’S WAY TO THE BARRE: Whitney Port is proving that a little moxie and a lot of time on the barre can pay off. A former reality TV personality and founder of women’s fashion brand Whitney Eve, Port is in the process of developing an activewear line.
She’s had conversations with Minneapolis-based Target, which plans to sell a small, 16-piece collection of tank tops, leggings, bralettes and jackets, priced from $19.99 to $49.99, on Target.com in September.
Port’s collection will not be exclusive to Target.
“Online affords us an opportunity to provide guests with more options than we can have in our physical stores,” a Target spokesman said. “Activewear is a growing area and we’re always looking for ways to expand our assortment.”
Port has tried her hand designing with Cooper Street and Sportsgirl in Australia in the past.
Characterized by “ballet touches” and “soft pinks,” the new collection harks back to the years that Port practiced ballet in high school. She also plans to translate the “feminine and funky prints” she uses in Whitney Eve into her first activewear project.
Even with a growing brand that is sold at stores such as Nordstrom, Mixology and Envy Clothing in seven countries, not to mention her status as a newlywed, Port still finds time to stay active. “It’s a big part of my life right now,” she said. “I’m interested in fashion and health and wellness.”
She also likes discovering new designers and traveling, two topics that she explored with Miami-based accessories designer Ana Mari Ortega on Wednesday night at Petit Ermitage. While Port had incorporated Ortega’s silver and black lizard handbag in an outfit of the day on her blog, the two had never met until then. At a dinner celebrating Ortega’s national expansion, Port picked Ortega’s brain on places to visit in Spain, where Ortega’s mother is from, as well as the Florida Keys, where the binge-worthy show “Bloodline” is filmed. Ortega was happy not only to strike up a fast friendship but also flirt with the idea of creating a capsule collection with Port in the future. “I love talking to people,” she said.
