GAME ON: While the annual Women’s Tennis Association pre-Wimbledon party marks the beginning of the Wimbledon tournament, at the event at London’s Kensington Roof Gardens Thursday, Serena Williams had soccer on the brain. “I am really upset I am not watching England right now, I love England,” said Williams as she arrived at the party, referring to the country’s World Cup game against Uruguay Thursday night. Dressed in a Burberry trench, Williams noted that she’ll be rooting for the country during the tournament. “I love [England player] Wayne Rooney,” she divulged. “I am a big fan of his, I love his game and I think his family is just so sweet.”
Williams was most likely left disappointed at the end of the evening, as England lost 2-1, though Rooney did score the lone goal. Her older sister Venus Williams, who wore a sequined BCBG dress, said she’s also trying to capture “glimpses,” of the soccer tournament. As to their own discipline, both sisters said they’d been training hard for the tennis season, and both will compete in this year’s Wimbledon, which begins Monday. Fellow athletes at the party numbered Maria Sharapova and Heather Watson, along with guests including Mischa Barton, Jane Seymour and Chloe Green. And in between sipping Champagne and indulging in mini-pots of strawberries and cream, those gathered got to watch the World Cup game unfold on a giant screen at the party.
