Columbia Sportswear Co. will enter India through an exclusive distribution agreement with New Delhi-based Chogori India Retail Ltd.
Tim Boyle, president and chief executive officer of Columbia, noted that CIRL is Columbia’s 27th international distributor. Collectively, distribution agreements have brought Columbia’s brands to more than 70 countries over the past two decades.
“We are confident that CIRL, with more than a decade of experience building consumer brands in India, is well equipped to compete and make us one of the first U.S.-based outdoor companies to penetrate the world’s second-most populous country,” Boyle said.
Columbia does business in a total of about 100 markets outside the U.S. Its Mountain Hardwear brand had worked with CIRL in the past.
Hemant Sachdev, founder of CIRL, said, “We look forward to bringing the outstanding performance and quality of Columbia’s products to India’s emerging base of outdoor consumers.”
CIRL has distribution arrangements in India with more than 10 brands, all in the outdoor market.
In addition to Columbia and Mountain Hardwear, the Portland, Ore.-based firm’s brand portfolio includes Sorel, Montrail and OutDry.
In 2012, Columbia had sales of $1.67 billion. The U.S. accounted for 56.7 percent, or $946.7 million, with Latin America and Asia Pacific making up 22.6 percent, or $377.6 million; Europe, the Middle East and Africa 13.8 percent, or $230.6 million, and Canada 6.9 percent, or $114.7 million. The share outside the U.S. has risen to 43.3 percent last year from 40.6 percent in 2010.
