LONDON — For her encore collection with Topshop, Kate Moss has whipped up designs that riff on her famed haute bohemian aesthetic. The 40-piece Kate Moss for Topshop lineup, which will hit shop floors April 30, takes its cues from treasured pieces in Moss’ wardrobe, with Sir Philip Green, Topshop’s owner, describing the range as being infused with “Kate’s own DNA.”

“It’s unique, special, her own style,” said Green of the collection.
The line spotlights rich fabrics and detailing, such as mesh bolero jackets stitched with artfully tarnished sequins, luxurious silk satin pajama-style pantsuits and a cocktail dress that’s intricately crafted from sequins, chain details and beads.
Green told WWD that he and Moss had set out to create “a collection,” rather than a series of collections, as Moss’ collaborations with Topshop had been in the past. He added that, this time around, he gave Moss and her team their own offices from which to work. “They were in a separate building. I didn’t want her to be distracted, and I wanted her to be able to come and go as she pleased,” he said.
“We were much more focused this time, very clearly focused on what we wanted to achieve and what she wanted to achieve. Kate has learned a hell of a lot about the process, and she’s given a lot more time to the collection,” said Green.
The collection is “more going-out-led, more premium-led,” he added, with a few very special pieces in the mix. They include the beaded and sequined cocktail dress, which will retail for 600 pounds, or $1,200, and will be sold exclusively at Topshop’s Oxford Circus store, and on topshop.com and Net-a-porter.com.
Prices for the collection as a whole will be in line with past Kate Moss collections, ranging from 38 pounds, or $76, for a satin scalloped camisole top and rising to 600 pounds for the beaded and sequined dress.
Not surprisingly, the lineup also takes inspiration from Moss’ globe-trotting, high-octane lifestyle. There are looks that play on dressing for Spain’s Balearic Islands, such as embroidered, heavy cotton kaftans, through to glam cocktail dresses, such as one gold lamé floor-length number with a low back. The line also includes a cropped, fringed navy leather jacket inspired by a similar piece that Moss has sported to Rolling Stones concerts, which she describes as her “gig jacket.”
Green said Moss has been so involved in creating the collection that the two have a running joke: “’Just feel the quality, feel the fabric, Uncle Phil,’” he said, imitating Moss. He said she’s also becoming commercially savvy, telling him: “Uncle Phil, we need more dresses.”
This collection will have a wider distribution than Moss’ previous ones for Topshop. It will launch at 346 stores in 41 countries, which alongside all Topshop’s global stores and its online store will include retailers Net-a-porter.com, Nordstrom and nordstrom.com in the U.S.; Galeries Lafayette in France and Beijing; Brown Thomas in Dublin; Hudson’s Bay in Canada, and de Bijenkorf in Amsterdam.
Harper’s Bazaar, which will feature Moss wearing the collection on their May cover, will offer three looks from the collection for pre-order from April 15 on the title’s ShopBazaar online platform. The looks will be those featured on Harper’s subscriber cover, their news-stand cover and one of the inside fashion shots from Moss’ shoot.
Green, who will mark the collection’s launch with an event at Topshop’s Oxford Circus store the evening of April 29, said the decision to undertake a second collaboration with Moss was an easy one. “I trust her implicitly. She trusts me. We’re friends,” he said.
As for the future, Green said there is nothing at all in the pipeline following this collection. “She’s done a great job — and she’s really enjoyed it. She called me from Brazil where she [was] at an amfAR event and I have never heard her so excited,” he said.
