Miami-based swimwear company Red Carter has joined Amerex Group in New York, which licenses outerwear and swimwear for brands like Jones New York, Weather Tamer and 1 Madison. Carter’s new title is design director, and the acquisition includes his partnership in New York’s Salon9 showroom, which represents his Glam and namesake collections, as well as Mara Hoffman, 6 Shore Road and Martha Rey.
“I was having trouble keeping up with production and delivering on time, and buyers suggested this option because they really believe in the line,” said Carter, adding it has already resulted in shipping cruise 2011 to 400 Macy’s units compared to 60.
While Glam’s styling and starting retail price of $180 remain, the Red Carter collection, which accounts for 60 percent of his overall business, features larger sizes and full-figure cuts at a slightly lower price.
“I’m the new hot designer for soccer moms,” said Carter, whose 24-piece coat line, at $200 to $500 retail, will bow for fall 2012. “They’re letting me be very entrepreneurial and grow into a lifestyle brand with ready-to-wear, watches and more.”
Ira Granger, chief executive officer and president of Amerex, plans to increase swimwear from 20 to 30 percent of the business in the next few years.
“We’re actively seeking swim,” Granger said, “and insiders recommended Red right off the bat.”
