PARIS – Zandra Rhodes has created a series of exclusive prints for Valentino’s Hieronymus Bosch-inspired spring collection, Pierpaolo Piccioli’s hotly anticipated first solo outing at the Italian label.
“They look wonderful. I’ve just this second come out of the showroom with Pierpaolo,” said the veteran British designer Saturday evening, the day before the show. “You can see they’re Zandra Rhodes, but you can also see that they’ve been interpreted specially for them.
“I love the fact that he wanted to use me for his first solo collection. It’s very feminine, it’s very gorgeous, I feel very honored,” she continued.
“Pierpaolo rang me up, and the whole team came to my studio in London. They chose very particular Zandra Rhodes motifs, wiggles and the way I interpret things like my palm trees and magical animals and magical birds. It just looks like a lovely expression of summer.”
Despite a career in fashion spanning half a century, collaborations are something of a rarity for Rhodes, with the exception of her ongoing collaboration with UK-based fair trade fashion e-tailer Peopletree. “In general I only do prints for collections I do, but I so admire what [Valentino has] been doing, it just felt right,” she said.
